Website Hosting Cost Tools

A “free domain” promotion usually covers a defined registration period, while the hosting plan has its own prepaid term and renewal price. Put each charge on its own line before comparing offers. This dated example uses Bluehost’s US-dollar public pricing for one eligible, non-premium .com domain and a Starter shared-hosting plan; it is a worked snapshot, not a quote or recommendation.

Worked example: one .com with a 36-month hosting term

Prices and offer details were checked November 3, 2026. Bluehost’s pricing page shows Starter at $3.99 per month for a 36-month term, renewing at $9.99 per month on a 36-month term. It says one domain is free for the first service year, subject to the offer’s value limit and eligibility rules. The same page says the domain then renews automatically at the then-current rate until canceled.

Bill or periodPublished exampleHow to read it
Hosting, initial term$3.99 × 36 = $143.6436 months of hosting billed for the selected term. This is separate from domain registration.
Domain, first registration year$0 under the eligible offerBluehost says the first-year benefit covers a domain up to $17.99 in value. Check the exact extension and offer in checkout.
.com registration list price$12.99The public domain table lists registration and renewal separately. It is a reference price, not an extra charge if the eligible offer actually makes the first year free.
.com renewal after the free year$23.99 per yearAt this listed rate, years two and three would total $47.98 if the rate and eligibility remain unchanged.
Hosting after the initial term$9.99 × 36 = $359.64This is the displayed hosting renewal for a 36-month renewal term; it is not part of the first $143.64 term.

Under those assumptions, the initial 36 months of hosting plus two post-promotion domain renewals would be $191.62 before tax and optional services ($143.64 + $47.98). The domain price table and plan offer may change, and the renewal amount is subject to the then-current rate; confirm the selected domain, renewal date, full prepaid hosting total, taxes, and terms in your own account before buying.

Free-domain renewal checklist

  1. Confirm the hosting plan and billing term that qualify. Check whether the domain must be new or may be transferred, which extensions are eligible, whether premium names are excluded, the offer’s value cap, and the deadline to claim it.
  2. At checkout, verify that the exact domain’s first-year charge is zero and note the included registration length. Do not assume an offer renews for free.
  3. Open the registrar’s price table or renewal center for that extension. Record the annual renewal amount, currency, taxes, privacy charges, and any other selected add-ons separately.
  4. Write down the domain’s renewal date and whether auto-renew is on. Bluehost says its included domain renews at its then-current rate after the first year unless canceled.
  5. Read the hosting order summary as its own bill: initial prepaid total, initial term, renewal rate, renewal term, and any optional services. A low monthly headline can represent a longer upfront payment.
  6. Check what happens if you cancel or change the hosting plan. The promotion’s domain terms may have separate conditions from the hosting refund or cancellation terms.
  7. Before renewal, compare the account’s actual domain renewal amount and hosting renewal amount independently. If moving the domain, check registrar transfer restrictions and timing before changing nameservers or canceling hosting.

Keep the site budget separated

Use the website cost calculator to model hosting and annual domain renewal with your own prices. The domain renewal worksheet separates registration, renewal, privacy, transfer and restoration charges. For a broader hosting comparison, see the hosting plan cost method.
